Building partnerships

NHS and local authority services should work collaboratively to ensure that patients who receive support to quit smoking during their interaction with the health service, continue to receive support when they go back into the community. This will maximise the impact of NHS tobacco dependence treatment services by reducing the number of people who relapse after leaving hospital.

Pharmacies have a key role to play in the delivery of stop smoking support in the community. NHS services should build links with local pharmacies to ensure that smokers are provided with pharmacotherapy and stop smoking support when they leave hospital.
