About ASH

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) was established in 1971 by the Royal College of Physicians. It is a public health charity which works to eliminate the harm caused by tobacco. The organisation is headed by chief executive Hazel Cheeseman and governed by a Board of Trustees. The Duke of Gloucester is the patron.

ASH also provides the secretariat for the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Smoking and Health.

ASH is globally recognised for its success in effectively campaigning for workable and evidence based policies and has played a pivotal role in the campaign for a number of policy measures including smokefree legislation and standardised packaging.

ASH also worked to secure the success of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) and in 2011 was awarded the prestigious WHO World No Tobacco Day medal. In 2012 ASH was awarded the Luther L. Terry Award for outstanding organisations by the American Cancer Society.

ASH co-ordinates the Smokefree Action Coalition and is a member of the Smokefree Partnership and the Framework Convention Alliance.
