Webinar: Tobacco industry levy: making the polluter pay

This ASH webinar explored the proposal for a levy on tobacco manufacturers, a policy that has the potential to shift the financial burden of smoking from the taxpayer to the tobacco industry.

Speakers discussed how the levy would work, why it is needed, as well as insights into public support for the levy and the political landscape.

The webinar was chaired by Sebastian Rees, Principal Research Fellow and Head of Health at the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), and included presentations from:

  • Dr Rob Branston, Associate Professor in Business Economics and co-Director of the Tobacco Control Research Group at the University of Bath.
  • Hazel Cheeseman, Chief Executive at ASH.
