This page includes leaflets and handouts developed by the Smoking in Pregnancy Challenge Group. These are designed to support maternity practitioners to have evidence-based conversations with pregnant women about quitting smoking. 

Please note that we are not currently able to accept requests for printed copies of the resources. Services are instead advised to download and print Challenge Group resources directly from this webpage.

Carbon monoxide (CO) screening 

Carbon monoxide (CO) is particularly dangerous during pregnancy. It deprives the baby of oxygen, slows growth and development, and increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth and sudden infant death.

The Challenge Group has produced the below resources on CO screening:

Smoking and your baby: advice for parents leaflet

The 'Smoking and your Baby' leaflet is designed to support conversations with parents and families about the importance of quitting smoking and maintaining a smokefree home. This leaflet can be viewed and downloaded here.

The leaflet is also available in the following languages:

Secondhand smoke postcards

These 5 postcards highlight the harms of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure in the home and the benefits of quitting smoking or switching to vaping. They are intended to be used directly with women and families and can also be used as training aids.

The download includes:

  • 5 postcards with information about the delivery of Very Brief Advice (VBA), the harms of SHS exposure and the impact of smoking during pregnancy
  • Print, standard and editable PowerPoint versions
  • Generic versions linking to the NHS Smokefree website, and editable versions which allow colleagues to add their local stop smoking service details

Vaping before, during and after pregnancy

These resources are designed to support conversations with pregnant women who smoke and are inquiring about vapes. The resources will be updated in line with any updates to NICE guidance or significant evidence updates. The ‘Infographic for pregnant women’ was developed in collaboration with Tommy’s.
