Learning from the COSTED trial and translating it into practice

Smokefree NHS
Apr 2024

On 27th March 2024, ASH hosted a NHS Smokefree network event the learnings from the newly published COSTED trial and translating them into practice through the “swap to stop” scheme.

The event was chaired by Allan Gregory, Tobacco Control Programme Manager, OHID.

We explored the link between health inequalities and emergency departments, with speaker Dominique Allwood, Chief Medical Officer UCL Partners, discussing the demographics & inequalities of those attending A&E, and the opportunities it presents to treat tobacco dependency.

Co-Chief investigators of the COSTED trial, Professor Caitlin Notley and Dr Ian Pope, gave an overview of the trial and its findings.

We heard learnings from a new case study on implementing a COSTED type initiative in conjunction with Swap to Stop. Kate Frost, Operations Manager at Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust and Sally Lee, Senior Project Manager at West Yorkshire ICB talked through how they planned, funded and executed their swap to stop scheme and gave advice on how other Trusts could do the same.
