ASH response to latest ONS data on smoking prevalence
Responding to the latest Office for National Statistics Data for 2025 that shows that smoking prevalence in the UK has fallen to 9.8%, Hazel Cheeseman, Chief Executive of Action on Smoking and Health said:
"For the first time, fewer than one in ten people in the UK smoke. This is really encouraging progress and shows what can be achieved through sustained action to reduce smoking.
“The Government has delivered historic legislation to create a smoke-free generation, but it will take time for this to have its full effect. The last Government set a target to reduce smoking to 5% by 2030. Despite the progress we are seeing, it is now unlikely that this ambition will be met.
“The Government now needs to set a new, ambitious goal for reducing smoking, backed by a clear plan to support the 4.9 million people who still smoke to quit, in every community. Today’s data also shows that inequalities between areas persist, despite the progress made.
“Smoking has fallen enormously over recent decades, but it remains the biggest driver of preventable death in the UK. Now is the time to finish the job."
