ASH, AHA and OHA response to the Ethics and Integrity Commission's review into lobbying, disclosure and access to government
Caroline Cerny, speaking on behalf of Action on Smoking and Health, the Alcohol Health Alliance and the Obesity Health Alliance said:
“From tobacco and alcohol to unhealthy food, there is extensive evidence that companies profiting from products that harm our health have tried to influence public policy in ways that protect their commercial interests. For decades these industries have lobbied against, delayed or weakened measures designed to improve public health. Too often, that lobbying happens behind closed doors.
We welcome the EIC's recommendations. Greater transparency is a vital first step towards ensuring public policy is open, accountable and focussed on protecting the public interest. The public has a right to know who is seeking to influence decisions that affect their health and wellbeing, particularly when those seeking influence have a direct financial interest in the outcome.”
