Guernsey leads the way in tobacco control

Speaking out about her visit to Guernsey on Friday 7th June, Pamela Furness Chief Executive of ASH – the tobacco control lobbying organisation -commented:

“ASH is kept very busy highlighting the dirty tricks of the tobacco industry and it is heartwarming to know that Guernsey are giving serious thought to tougher legislative controls on the promotion of tobacco.

“Tobacco is the only legal product that kills its consumers when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In the UK alone over 111,000 people die every year from tobacco related disease. With the equivalent of a school full of children starting to smoke every day, it’s not hard to see that the tobacco companies are targeting their advertising at vulnerable young people. The nicotine in tobacco is highly addictive, leading to over one in four of 15 year olds regularly smoking cigarettes.

“Governments must take steps to introduce tougher controls on the promotion of this lethal drug. It will be a great day for Guernsey parents and children when the proposed legislation gets through. ASH feels honoured to be invited to meet with leading Health Professionals in Guernsey who really do put children’s health and welfare high on the agenda.”
