Guernsey leads the way in tobacco control

Speaking out about her visit to Guernsey onFriday 7th June, Pamela Furness Chief Executive of ASH – the tobacco control lobbyingorganisation -commented:

“ASH is kept very busy highlighting thedirty tricks of the tobacco industry and it is heartwarming to know that Guernsey aregiving serious thought to tougher legislative controls on the promotion of tobacco.

“Tobacco is the only legal product thatkills its consumers when used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In the UKalone over 111,000 people die every year from tobacco related disease. With the equivalentof a school full of children starting to smoke every day, it’s not hard to see that thetobacco companies are targetting their advertising at vulnerable young people. Thenicotine in tobacco is highly addictive, leading to over one in four of 15 year oldsregularly smoking cigarettes.

“Governments must take steps to introducetougher controls on the promotion of this lethal drug. It will be a great day for Guernseyparents and children when the proposed legislation gets through. ASH feels honoured to beinvited to meet with leading Health Professionals in Guernsey who really do put children’shealth and welfare high on the agenda.”
