Dons Grab BAT’s Blood Money
Reacting to the announcement that CambridgeUniversity is to accept £1.5 million of sponsorship from the tobacco giant, BAT, PamelaFurness, Chief Executive of tobacco control pressure group, ASH said,
“Cambridge University has sold its goodname to a company which profits from sales of a lethal and highly addictive product. Thisacceptance of blood money is a betrayal of all those academics upon whose outstanding workCambridge’s reputation has been built.
“Cambridge has made an enormouscontribution to the fight against death and disease in developing countries. Yet byaccepting this money, the university will inevitably be used by BAT to promote tobacco inits developing world markets. Clearly this will undermine all the medical advancementsthat Cambridge has pioneered.”
