Support the All Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health recommendations for a ‘polluter pays’ levy on tobacco manufacturers

What is the problem?
The Government intends to vote down in the Commons proposals passed by the House of Lords, to make tobacco manufacturers fund measures to deliver the Smokefree 2030 ambition.

How can I help?
The majority of the public support the APPG’s proposals, but Conservative MPs need to be persuaded. Email your local MP asking them to vote for clauses 177-180 (Tobacco products statutory scheme) in the Health and Care Bill.

Find your local MP by entering your postcode at: https://www.theyworkforyou.com/mps/

Your email could mention:

  • Why we need more funding to tackle smoking
  • How much you support the Smokefree 2030 ambition
  • Why tobacco companies should pay to fix the problem they created

Remember to include your address and postcode so they know you are a constituent.

Why does it matter?
Funding for measures to help smokers quit have been cut by a third since 2015, while tobacco manufacturers continue to make massive profits. They can afford to pay to fix the lethal damage their products do – killing tens of thousands of people every year, more than COVID.

A ‘polluter pays’ levy could raise around £700 million a year from tobacco manufacturers to pay for stop smoking services, mass media campaigns like Stoptober, and work to stop the sale of illegal tobacco.

What else can I do?
If you have time, tweet at the Government Ministers below calling on them to make tobacco companies pay to end smoking. Remember to use #Smokefree2030
