Win for mail order cigarettes could spell disaster for health and wealth of UK

Anticipating the outcome of the European Court ruling on the Enlightened Tobacco Company’s direct mail operation, ASH spokeswoman Amanda Sandford said:

“If the ruling goes in ETC’s favour, it could result in a huge increase in smoking related illnesses and premature death if smokers take advantage of the cheap cigarettes on offer. It would also be disastrous from the Government’s perspective as tobacco revenues would be reduced.

“ASH believes the meaning of the European Union directive is quite clear, that is, that UK citizens are entitled to the benefits of lower excise duties only if they personally import the goods themselves. We are therefore optimistic that the European Court will interpret the directive in the same way and put a stop to ETC’s trading once and for all.”
