ASH news release:  For immediate release: Thursday 19th October 2006

New Head of Policy for ASH

Martin Dockrell is to move to ASH as head of their successful campaigning function, the charity announced today. Dockrell comes with over 30 years’ experience in the voluntary sector including 20 years of health campaigning and research under his belt.  An AIDS activist in the 80’s and 90’s he helped establish a clutch of grass roots charities among London’s cultural and ethnic minorities and in Northern Ireland. For the last five years he has been leading Asthma UK’s policy and campaigning work, working closely with ASH, especially on smokefree public places.

“I am tremendously excited by the move,” said Dockrell. “ASH is a fearless and feisty campaigning organisation and represents the best traditions of voluntary sector health action.”

Dockrell specialises in using research data to make the case for policy reform and is an enthusiast for community based research. He recently led an international study on patient experience and his report ‘Living on a knife edge’ won the Communiqué Award for best use of data.

ASH Director Deborah Arnott said:

“Martin joins us at a very exciting time. We have achieved a great deal in recent years but tobacco is still the biggest cause of preventable death in the UK and there is a great deal more to do.”

Dockrell will be taking up his new position in January.
