Cut price mail order cigarettes found to be illegal

Commenting on the preliminary ruling by the European Court on the Enlightened Tobacco Company’s mail-order operation, ASH spokeswoman, Amanda Sandford, said:

“This is very encouraging news. We are delighted that the advocate general has ruled against the tobacco company. This should make it clear once and for all that operations such as this are illegal.

“However, it is now time that other EU states raised their tobacco taxes in order to deter the illegal importation of tobacco into the UK. Such a measure would lead to in a fall in tobacco consumption and a significant improvement in the health of EU citizens in the longer term.”
