BAT sponsors school

Reacting to news that tobacco company, BATIndustries, is to sponsor voluntary aided Archbishop Ramsey school in Southwark, PamelaFurness, chief executive of tobacco control group ASH said:

” This news is very disturbing indeed.Parents must be deeply concerned that their children’s education is being funded by acompany which manufactures and actively promotes a lethal and highly addictive product.

“The equivalent of a small school ofchildren start smoking every day and teenage smoking is on the increase. BAT is clearlyusing this opportunity to buy into and influence the lives of young people and promoteitself as a respectable company.

“It is unacceptable that schools are soshort of cash that they have to stoop to accept funding from tobacco companies. After all,do we as a society really want these sort of companies interfering with our children’seducation and future?

“The Secretary of State for Education andEmployment should make clear the Government’s policy on where it stands regarding thepromotion of tobacco. If the Government won’t protect our children from tobacco, whowill?”
