ASH welcomes proposal to raise legal age for purchasing tobacco from 16 to 18

The proposal to raise the legal age for the purchasing of tobacco from 16 to 18 hasbeen welcomed by ASH. Clive Bates, Director of ASH, said: “This is a sensible movewhich would make it harder for 12 and 13- year olds to get hold of cigarettes. But whatreally matters is the enforcement. There’s no point in having a new limit if youdon’t bother to enforce it. Newsagents who sell to underage smokers are doing thedirty work of the cigarette companies.”
