ASH WELCOMES CLINTON’S MOVES TOREGULATE TOBACCO
Pamela Furness, Chief Executive of the tobaccocontrol pressure group ASH said, “ASH welcomes President Clinton’s bold decision toregulate tobacco as an addictive drug. The measures he has announced will help stopchildren becoming hooked on this lethal substance.
The decision to regulate tobacco is in sharpcontrast to UK where we have a hopelessly inadequate system of voluntary agreements tocontrol tobacco promotion.
ASH believes that a comprehensive package oftobacco control measures is needed including a ban on all tobacco advertising andpromotion, continuing increases in tobacco taxation and proper enforcement of the ban onsales to children. We urge the Government to follow America’s example and act now toprotect our children’s health.”
